The Complete Guide to Custom Gift Boxes

A custom gift box is a box made to hold a gift and to look like part of it, so the choice of structure, size and finish matters as much as the print. The main styles are rigid boxes with a lid, magnetic-closure boxes, drawer boxes and folding cartons. TBPB makes gift boxes with no minimum order, so one box for a special occasion is as easy to order as a thousand.

Which gift box style should I pick?

StyleBest forTrade-off
Rigid lid and baseKeepsakes, jewelry, gift setsHeavier, higher cost, stored assembled
Magnetic closurePremium unboxing, higher-priced giftsCosts more than a plain lid
Drawer boxSmall gifts and presentation piecesTwo parts to align
Folding cartonEveryday gifts, retail, light itemsLess sturdy; ships flat

If the gift costs a lot or is meant to be kept, go rigid. If the box is thrown away after opening, a folding carton does the job for less. Browse the gift boxes, the magnetic closure rigid boxes and the wider rigid box range.

How do I size a gift box?

  1. Measure the gift at its longest, widest and tallest points.
  2. Decide what else goes in: tissue, a card, a ribbon, an insert.
  3. Add clearance on each side so the gift lifts out easily, usually a quarter to a half inch for a rigid box.
  4. Check the lid depth so it closes without pressing on the gift.

Worked example: a candle in a jar 3 inches across and 3.5 inches tall, plus a folded card. A box 3.75 x 3.75 x 4 inches inside leaves room for a paper wrap and a small insert, and the lid closes without pushing on the candle. If you are unsure of the clearance for your gift, send us the measurements and we confirm it on the dieline.

What finishes make a gift feel premium?

Often the paper, the print and the opening do more than any finish. A rigid box wrapped in a good paper, with a clean logo, feels expensive before the lid comes off. A lined interior and a fitted insert add to it. If you want a specific finish such as foil or soft touch, ask us to confirm it for your spec. Not every finish is available on every board or run size.

Do I need an insert?

For anything that moves, yes. A fitted insert holds the gift still and frames it when the lid lifts. For soft or flat gifts, tissue is enough. Our insert guide covers the materials.

How do I keep the cost down?

Choose one size for a range of gifts and change the insert or the card. Print one or two colors on the lid and keep the base plain. Use a single finish rather than several. When you compare quotes, compare board thickness, wrap, print, insert and quantity line by line, because gift boxes vary a lot. Our guide to jewelry box cost shows how to do it.

When is a gift bag better than a gift box?

When the gift is soft or oddly shaped, or when you give many gifts quickly. A bag is faster to fill and cheaper. A box protects fragile or small items and looks more considered. See our gift bag guide for the comparison.

Questions buyers ask

  1. Is there a minimum order for custom gift boxes?

No. Order one gift box or thousands. Many buyers order a sample with the real gift inside first, then reorder in volume.

  2. What is the most premium gift box style?

A rigid box with a magnetic closure and a fitted insert. It costs more, so use it where the gift price supports it.

  3. How much clearance should a gift box have?

About a quarter to a half inch around the gift for a rigid box, plus room for tissue or an insert. Send the gift’s measurements and we confirm it.

  4. Do I need an insert in a gift box?

If the gift moves or is fragile, yes. For flat or soft gifts, tissue is enough.

  5. Is a gift box better than a gift bag?

A box protects small or fragile gifts and looks more considered. A bag is faster and cheaper for soft or irregular items.

  6. How do I get a quote?

Send the gift dimensions, the style and the quantity through the quote form. We return a dieline and a price, and we beat any written quote for the same specs.
