What an insert actually does
A bottle in a plain box is a loose object in a hollow space. Drop the box once and glass hits the wall. An insert fixes the bottle at the neck, the shoulder or the base, so force travels through the board rather than the glass. It also centers the bottle behind a window and keeps a dropper or pump from pressing against the lid, which matters more than people expect on serums and oils.
Insert types and when each one fits
A paperboard or corrugated die-cut insert is flat-packed, cheap to ship and good for a single bottle with a straight body. A folded neck-hold insert grips the bottle by the shoulder and suits tall, slender bottles. A multi-bottle divider keeps sets from clinking, and is the usual answer for gift sets of two or three. Foam or EVA inserts cut to the exact bottle outline feel premium and cushion the best, which is why they appear in perfume and spirits sets. How to give us the right measurements
Measure the bottle at its widest diameter, its overall height with the cap on, and the neck diameter below the cap. If the bottle is square, measure both sides. Tell us the glass thickness and whether the surface is tapered or has a curved shoulder, because a tapered body needs a different cavity than a straight one. We cut the cavity with about 1/16 to 1/8 inch of tolerance so the bottle can be inserted by hand without force, but not so loose that it wobbles. If you can, post a real bottle for a fit test, which is the most reliable check before you commit to a full run.

Where inserts go wrong
The two usual mistakes are measuring the bottle without the cap and forgetting the label or shrink sleeve. A sleeve adds thickness at exactly the point the insert grips, and a wide cap can stop the lid closing. Another is choosing a cavity so tight that packers struggle on a busy line, which slows everything down and tears the board edge.
