Kraft vs Corrugated Mailer Boxes: Which to Choose

For most mailer boxes the real choice is not kraft versus corrugated, because nearly every mailer is corrugated. What you are choosing is the outside surface: natural brown kraft, or a white or coated liner that prints brighter. Pick kraft for a natural look and simple one- or two-color artwork. Pick white for full-color photography and fine detail.

Is kraft stronger than corrugated?

No, and the question mixes two different things. Corrugated is a structure: a fluted paper layer glued between flat liners. Kraft is a color and fiber type that can be used for those liners. A kraft mailer is a corrugated mailer with a brown face.

What actually decides strength is the flute and the board grade. A thin E-flute gives a flatter, smoother wall that prints well and suits lighter items. A thicker B-flute or a double-wall build protects heavier or more fragile products in the mail, and it costs more per box and takes more room in a shipping carton. Our corrugated board specifications guide explains the flutes in more detail. If someone tells you kraft is the tougher choice, ask which board they mean, because the answer will not be the color.

How does print look on kraft compared with white?

White gives you a bright, accurate canvas, and kraft does not. Ink is mostly translucent, so on brown paper every color is mixed with the brown underneath. Dark inks such as black, navy and deep green read well and look rich. Light colors, pastels and anything that depends on white turn muddy or disappear.

Here is a concrete case. Say your logo is a charcoal line drawing with a cream background. On kraft, you would print the line art in one dark ink and let the brown paper act as the background color, which looks deliberate. If you want the cream to actually be cream, or you have a product photo on the lid, white is the surface to use. Ask us to confirm what white underprint or coating options are available for your size before you commit the artwork to kraft.

What should I check before I order?

Check three things in order. First, the inside dimensions of your product plus anything that travels with it, such as tissue or a card. Second, the weight, because a heavy item in a thin wall will bow at the lid. Third, the artwork: if more than a third of it is light color or photography, white is the safer surface. Print a sample before a full run so you see the real brown, not a screen preview.

Small detail that trips people up: kraft varies from batch to batch. Two runs a few months apart can differ slightly in shade, and no printer can pin brown paper to an exact Pantone. If your brand needs one exact color everywhere, that is one more reason to lean white.

Which one suits my brand?

Choose the surface to match the artwork you already have, not the story you wish the box told. Both can carry a premium feel when the design is simple and the fit is right.

One middle path worth knowing: kraft outside with a printed or white interior. Customers see the natural exterior first and get the bright print the moment they open the lid. Ask us to confirm it for your size and style.

Does the choice change the cost?

A little, but it is rarely the biggest lever. Size, board grade, quantity, print coverage and finishes move a quote far more than the facing color does. A one-color print on kraft can run lighter than full-coverage color on white, which is the one place the choice can save money.

When you compare two quotes, line them up on the same size, the same flute, the same print coverage and the same quantity. A quote that looks cheaper often has a thinner board or less print. Our mailer box sizes guide helps you check the dimensions before you compare.

Which is better for the environment?

Both are paper and both are widely accepted in curbside cardboard recycling in the US. Kraft often carries the eco look, but the look is not an environmental claim. What matters more is how much material the box uses, if it is coated or laminated, and if you right-size it so you are not shipping empty space.

We do not make unverified environmental claims on a box, and you should be careful about printing them yourself. If you want to state something like recycled content or recyclability on the lid, check the rules that apply to your product and your market, and ask us to confirm the board you are ordering.

When is neither kraft nor white corrugated the right answer?

For very light items, a plain folding carton can do the job with less board. For glass, jewelry or high-end electronics, a rigid box feels more premium and a corrugated mailer may be the wrong class of product. If your goal is shipping protection first and branding second, a standard corrugated shipper in kraft with a branded label or sleeve is a reasonable answer. Browse our mailer boxes and corrugated boxes to compare formats, or read our shipping box sizes guide if protection is the priority.

Questions buyers ask

  1. Is a kraft mailer box the same as a corrugated mailer box?

Usually yes. Most mailer boxes are corrugated board, and kraft only describes the natural brown paper facing on it. The alternative is a white or coated facing on the same structure. Strength comes from the flute and board grade, so ask for those specs rather than the color.

  2. Is there a minimum order for custom mailer boxes?

No. We print mailer boxes with no minimum order, so you can order a single sample to test the fit and the print, or a full run once you approve it. Send your dimensions and quantity through the quote form and we reply with a dieline and a price.

  3. Does full-color print work on kraft?

It works, but the colors shift because the ink sits on brown paper. Dark colors hold up well, while light colors, pastels and white fade or turn muddy. For photography or exact brand colors, a white or coated surface is the safer choice. Ask us to confirm options for your size.

  4. Which is cheaper, kraft or white mailer boxes?

The facing color is rarely the main cost driver. Size, board grade, quantity, print coverage and finishes move a quote more. Simple one-color print on kraft can come in lighter than full-coverage print on white. Compare quotes only on identical specs.

  5. Are kraft mailer boxes recyclable?

Kraft corrugated is paper and is generally accepted in curbside cardboard recycling in the US, as is plain white corrugated. Heavy coatings or laminates can complicate it. Check the rules that apply where your customers live, and ask us to confirm the board before you print a recycling claim.

  6. How do I get a quote and a dieline?

Use the quote form and send the inside dimensions of your product plus the quantity, even if it is one. We return a dieline and a quote, and you approve a digital proof before printing. You can request kraft and white samples to compare side by side.

How to order

Send us the inside dimensions of what you are shipping and the quantity, even if it is one. We reply with a dieline and a quote, and you can see a digital proof before anything is printed. See the kraft mailer boxes for the natural option or the custom mailer boxes for a printed white surface, then use the quote form, or start from our mailer box range.

If you have a written quote from another supplier for the same specifications, send it over. Our price-beat guarantee means we beat it. Design help, samples and shipping are free, so you can compare kraft and white in your hands first.
