A collapsible bakery box is a food grade box that ships and stores flat and pops up in one motion when it is needed: a one piece lock corner box, an auto lock bottom carton, or a crash lock tray with a hinged lid. The point is the space it does not take. A bakery that uses two hundred boxes a day cannot store two hundred assembled boxes, so the box has to arrive flat in a bundle, live under the counter, and be ready in the time it takes to say the order back. We make them in white, kraft and full color with a grease resistant coating, in every bakery size, and with no minimum order. The number that matters is seconds per box: a lock corner box forms in about five, an auto lock bottom in about two.
Speed at the counter is not a small thing. At a morning rush, the box that takes ten seconds to fold instead of two costs a person on the line, and the one that fights back gets folded badly and delivered crooked.
Three collapsible structures
| Structure | How it pops up | Seconds per box | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| One piece lock corner | fold the sides up, push the corner tabs into the slots, lid hinges over | about 5 | cakes, pastries, cupcakes with inserts; the window box standard |
| Auto lock (crash lock) bottom | squeeze the sides and the pre-glued base springs flat; tuck the lid | about 2 | cookies, brownies, single serves, high volume counters |
| Crash lock tray with hinged lid | base springs open, lid is part of the blank | about 3 | pies, tarts, slabs, donuts by the dozen |
Sizes
| Size (inside) | Holds | Structure | Board |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 x 4 x 2.5 in | a cupcake, a slice, a single pastry | lock corner or auto lock | 16 pt, grease resistant |
| 6 x 6 x 3 in | 4 cupcakes with an insert, a mini cake, cookies | lock corner, window | 18 pt |
| 8 x 8 x 4 in | a 6 inch cake, 6 cupcakes, a pie | lock corner, window | 18 to 24 pt |
| 10 x 10 x 4 in | an 8 inch cake, 12 cupcakes, a dozen donuts | lock corner, window | 24 pt or E flute |
| 12 x 12 x 5 in | a 10 inch cake, a dozen large pastries | lock corner | E flute |
| 9 x 5 x 3 in | 6 cookies, brownies, a loaf | auto lock bottom | 18 pt |
Board and coating
16 point paperboard for single serves, 18 point for boxes to 6 inches, 24 point or E flute corrugated for 8 inches and up, because a cake box that size is carried by its base and a light board sags. Every box gets a grease resistant coating inside. Windows are clear film in the lid; leave them open or add vent holes for warm goods, and skip the film for a plastic free box.
Print and inserts
White board with full color for a branded bakery, kraft with one or two colors for the artisan look. Print the lid and one side. Cupcake inserts, paperboard sheets with die-cut holes in counts of 4, 6 and 12, drop into the lock corner boxes and hold each cake still. A flavor checklist on the end panel gives staff a marker box per flavor.
In short
What to send us: what you sell and in what counts, how many boxes a day, and whether the box is counter, delivery or gift. What you get back: a structure by seconds per box, sizes by product, board by weight, a grease coating and window plan, a dieline and a bundle of samples to fold on the line. What it costs you to start: nothing. Free design, free dieline, free samples, no minimum order.
Collapsible bakery box questions
What is a collapsible bakery box?
A food grade box that ships flat in a bundle and pops up when needed: a one piece lock corner box, an auto lock bottom carton, or a crash lock tray with a hinged lid. It stores under the counter and forms in two to five seconds without tape.
Which bakery box is fastest to assemble?
An auto lock bottom carton, about two seconds: squeeze the sides and the pre-glued base springs flat, then tuck the lid. A lock corner box takes about five seconds and is the standard for cakes with a window lid.
What size box does an 8 inch cake need?
About 10 by 10 by 4 inches inside, in 24 point board or E flute, because the box is carried by its base. A 6 inch cake fits 8 by 8 by 4; a 10 inch cake needs 12 by 12 by 5.
Do collapsible bakery boxes come with cupcake inserts?
Yes. Paperboard inserts with die-cut holes in counts of 4, 6 and 12 drop into the matching lock corner box and hold each cupcake still.
Is there a minimum order?
No. A few hundred for a new bakery or a pallet for a chain. Free design and dieline, free samples to fold on the line, and a printed proof before the run.
No minimum order. One or a full run. Free design and dieline, and a printed proof before production. Free samples so you can fold a bundle on the line before you commit. Price match: send a written quote for the same size, board, print and quantity and we will beat it.
