When a window earns its place
Soap is a product people want to look at and smell. A swirled cold-process bar with dried lavender on top sells itself through a window, and a plain white bar with a printed label usually does not. Before you commit to a cutout, ask whether the bar itself is the best part of your presentation. If it is, show it. If your selling point is a scent or an ingredient story, a solid carton with bold print may do more work.
Windows also change how a box behaves. A large cutout weakens the panel around it, so we keep generous margins and avoid pushing the opening too near a fold. For a standard bar the window is normally a rectangle or a rounded shape on the front panel, with the film glued from the inside.
Sizing the carton to the bar
Measure the bar length, width and thickness after it has fully cured and shrunk, because handmade bars lose water and get slightly smaller over several weeks. Add about 1/8 inch of clearance per side so the bar slides in without scraping the print, and a little more depth if you wrap the bar in paper or a band. A bar that rattles looks cheap, and one that is jammed in marks the board.

Board, film and print
Most soap cartons are folding carton paperboard in the 16 to 24 pt range, or a kraft board for a natural look. Kraft takes dark inks and spot colors well but mutes light colors, so test your palette before you print a run. The window film is a clear plastic layer on the inside, which is worth knowing if you are marketing the box as plastic-free. Finishes include matte or gloss aqueous coating, soft-touch lamination, spot UV and foil stamping.

What size window should a soap box have?
Leave a solid border of at least 1/4 inch around the cutout so the board stays rigid and the film has enough area to glue. For a typical bar the window usually shows the top two thirds of the face. Send your bar dimensions and we will size it.
How much bigger should the box be than the soap bar?
Measure the cured bar and add roughly 1/8 inch per side for clearance. Handmade soap shrinks as it cures, so measure after curing, not when you cut it. If you wrap the bar in paper first, include that thickness in the measurement.
Is the window film plastic?
Yes, the window is normally a clear plastic film glued inside the carton. That matters if you sell your packaging as plastic-free. If that is important to you, tell us, and we can discuss an open cutout without film or a different style such as a sleeve.
Can the box protect bars with essential oils?
Oils can mark uncoated board over time. A coated or laminated surface resists staining better, and a wrapped bar helps more. Tell us if your bar is oil-rich and we will suggest a finish. We cannot guarantee a stain-free result, so test one box before a full run.
Can I print on the inside of the box?
Yes. Inside print is available, and it is a good place for a story, usage tips or a pattern that shows through the window edge. Design the inside separately from the outside so the artwork does not run across fold lines.
What is the minimum order for custom soap boxes with window?
