Custom Gable Boxes

Custom Gable Boxes: Versatile Packaging for Every Need

A gable box is a carton with a sloped, peaked top that folds into a carry handle, like a tiny house. People know them as the lunch box, the party favor box, and the grocery treat box. The shape does something a plain carton cannot: it works as its own handle, so the pack can be carried one-handed without a bag.

How a gable box is built

It is a single flat piece of paperboard, die-cut and glued along one side, that ships flat and pops open into a rectangular body. The two sloped roof panels meet at the top and lock with a tab or a die-cut slot. Most gable boxes are made from folding board such as SBS or kraft, which is light and takes print well. Because the body is a plain rectangle, sizing is simple: the product dimensions plus clearance, with the roof adding height above the contents.

What they are good for

  • Kids’ meals and snack packs. The handle is the point.
  • Bakery and treat boxes. Cookies, donuts, and small cakes travel well in a cardboard house.
  • Party favors and gift sets. The shape reads as a present.
  • Retail merchandise. Small goods that a customer carries straight out of the shop.

Limits to know

Gable boxes are not made for heavy loads. The handle is paperboard, and a box carrying more than a pound or two will sag at the fold. If you need to carry weight, step up to a sturdier board or use a paper bag. They also do not stack as neatly as a straight-sided carton, because the roof sits above the shoulders.

Printing

Gable boxes print well on all faces, and the roof panels are an underused space for a pattern or logo. Keep important artwork off the roof folds, where the print stretches and creases. A window cut-out on the body lets the product show through, and a matte or gloss coating protects against fingerprints.

If the box holds food, the labeling and food-contact requirements are the brand’s responsibility to confirm for the product and state.

Questions buyers ask

  1. What is a gable box?

A gable box is a carton with a peaked, sloped top that folds into a built-in carry handle. It ships flat and is assembled by folding and locking the roof panels.

  2. What are gable boxes used for?

Common uses include kids’ meals, bakery and treat boxes, party favors, gift sets, and small retail goods.

  3. How much weight can a gable box carry?

They suit light loads. The paperboard handle can sag with more than a pound or two, so heavier items need sturdier board or a bag.

  4. Can I get custom printed gable boxes in small quantities?

Yes. TBPB has no minimum order, so short runs are possible.

  5. Are gable boxes food safe?

That depends on the board, coating, and inks used. Confirm food-contact and labeling requirements for your product and state.
