This is the thing that separates a display box from a standard watch box. A gift box is opened once, in someone’s living room. A display box is opened, closed and handled by dozens of people a week, and it has to keep a row of watches looking tidy through all of it. So the priorities change: sturdy hinges or a lift-off lid, an insert that holds each watch firmly without squeezing the strap, and a layout that shows the dial face on, not folded into a pocket. Insert layout decides how it sells
The insert does most of the work. Pillows or slotted cushions hold a watch by the strap and case so the dial tilts toward the customer. Flat trays with a cut-out per watch suit smaller collections and keep a clean grid. Two, four, six or twelve positions are all common; the right count depends on the case diameter, because a 44 mm sports watch needs a much wider cell than a slim 32 mm dress watch. Measure the case diameter, the full strap length when laid out, and the case thickness, and add a few millimetres of clearance for the cushion. Foam, paperboard or fabric-wrapped board are the usual insert materials, and a custom foam insert is the neatest route when watches vary in size.
Material and finish
Display boxes are usually built from stiff board: thick paperboard for light counter use, or heavier board and corrugated for units that get moved around. The outside takes CMYK or Pantone print, matte or gloss coating, soft-touch lamination, foil and embossing. A matte black outside with a light interior makes dials pop under shop lighting, while a glossy interior shows every fingerprint. If you use a clear lid, expect it to show scratches over time and plan to replace it between seasons.

Display versus other formats
If you only need a branded holder for jewellery on a table, the wider display packaging range may fit better. Pack the box with the watches you plan to show, rather than a mock-up, when you order the first sample; it exposes any strap that sits too high or any cell that is too tight before you print a run.
