A pillow box is a small paperboard carton that folds flat and pops open into a soft, curved shape, closing with interlocking ends. It suits small, light items such as jewelry, soap, candles and gift tokens. TBPB makes custom pillow boxes to your size and artwork with no minimum order, from one box to ten thousand.

What is a pillow box actually good for?
It is a presentation box for small things. The curve gives it a soft, gift-like look, and the closed ends keep a light item from sliding out. Jewelry sellers use it for earrings and bracelets, soap makers for single bars, and event planners for favors.
It is not a protective carton. The sides flex, and the ends hold by interlocking, not by structure. If the product is heavier than a few ounces, sharp, or breakable, a tuck-top box or a mailer box is the better call. A pillow box also does not stack well on a shelf, so it fits hanging displays, counter baskets and gift tables better than a stacked retail wall.
Which pillow box style should I pick?
Choose by what the box has to do: look plain and natural, show the product, or look premium. We carry four product pages that cover those.
| Style | Pick it when |
|---|---|
| Standard pillow boxes | You want a printed box with your artwork on the curve |
| Kraft pillow boxes | Natural brown board suits soap, candles or handmade goods |
| Window pillow boxes | The product itself is the sales pitch and the buyer should see it |
| Luxury pillow boxes | The item is a gift or higher-ticket piece |
Our guide to kraft versus white boxes covers the material question in more detail. Finishes and coatings vary by style, so ask us to confirm for your spec.
How do I size a pillow box?
Measure the product, then size the box a little bigger than the product in every direction. The curve means the usable space inside is smaller than the flat dimensions suggest. This is the part most competitor pages skip.
- Measure the length, width and thickness of the product in inches.
- Decide on tissue or no tissue. Tissue adds bulk, so allow for it.
- Add clearance. A pillow box has soft, bowed sides, so thickness is where people run out of room.
- Order one sample, fill it with the real product, close it, and tilt it.
Worked example: a bar of soap measures 3.5 x 2.25 x 1 inches. Wrapped in a thin paper band it becomes about 3.5 x 2.25 x 1.1. Because the box bows outward, you size the inside length to about 3.75 inches, width to 2.5 and depth to 1.25. If you size to exactly 1 inch of depth, the curve squeezes the bar and the ends will not close cleanly.
Can I print on a pillow box?
Yes. We print your artwork on the box, and the design wraps around the curve. Keep text and logos away from the folds and the curved edges, where the artwork bends and gets harder to read. A centered logo with one or two lines of text usually reads better than a busy full-wrap pattern.
Print coverage, board and quantity all move the price. If you sell food, cosmetics or supplements, you own the label and legal copy; we print what you supply. Check the rules that apply to your product.
When should I choose a different box?
Pick something else when the product is heavy, fragile or stacked. A pillow box is the wrong format for glass, for anything over a few ounces, or for goods that ship loose in a mailer. For shipping, a mailer box protects the contents. For a retail wall, a custom retail box stands up better. Our overview of custom pillow boxes lists every pillow style we make.
Pillow box or tuck-top box?
If the product is light and the look is soft and giftable, use a pillow box. If it needs to stand on a shelf, hold edges square, or carry weight, use a tuck-top. The two are easy to confuse on a screen and very different in the hand.
| Question | Pillow box | Tuck-top box |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Curved sides | Square, rectangular sides |
| Stands on a shelf | Poorly | Yes |
| Holds weight | Light items only | Better for heavier items |
| Feels like | A small gift | A retail product |
Questions buyers ask
How to order
Send your product dimensions and quantity through the quote form, even if you only need one. We return a dieline and a price. Bring a written quote for the same specs from another supplier and our price-beat guarantee applies. Free design help, free samples and free shipping are included. If cost is the main question, read our guide to how much custom boxes cost first.
Is there a minimum order for pillow boxes?
No. Order one pillow box or ten thousand. Many buyers order a single box first to test the product fit and the closure, then reorder in the quantity they need.
What can I put in a pillow box?
Small, light, fairly flat items: jewelry, soap bars, candles, gift cards, cosmetics samples and party favors. Anything heavy, sharp or fragile needs a sturdier carton, because the curved sides flex and the ends only hold so much.
How do I size a pillow box?
Measure the product at its longest, widest and thickest points, then add clearance for the curve and any tissue. A product that is 3.5 inches long needs a box a little longer than that, since the ends curve inward. Send us your measurements and we confirm the dieline.
Do pillow boxes ship flat?
Yes. They are die-cut and folded flat, then popped into shape when you pack them. That saves storage space and keeps freight lighter than a pre-formed carton.
Can pillow boxes have a window?
Yes, we offer window pillow boxes with a clear cutout so the product shows. Ask us to confirm window size and placement for your specific dimensions.
How do I get a quote and a dieline?
Send the product dimensions, quantity and print coverage through the quote form. We return a dieline and a price, even for a quantity of one.
