Durable double-wall carton for food, featuring two layers of corrugated material for superior strength, insulation, and protection, ideal for bulk packaging, meal delivery, and perishable food transport.

Double-Wall Carton For Food

A double-wall carton for food is a corrugated box whose walls hold two layers of fluting between three liners. It earns its cost when the load is heavy, stacked or shipped, such as bulk jars, bottled sauces, catering orders and multi-pound gift hampers. For a light takeout meal or a pastry, single wall board is plenty.

What does double wall actually change in a food carton?

It changes the stacking strength and the way the box handles a hard knock. Single wall board has one layer of fluting, the wavy paper sandwiched between two flat liners. Double wall adds a second flute layer and a third liner, so the wall is thicker and resists crushing when cartons are piled on a pallet or in the back of a van.

It does not make the box food-safe, airtight or insulated in any meaningful way. A lot of food sellers assume the thicker wall will hold temperature. It slows heat transfer slightly, nothing more. If you ship anything that must stay cold, you need a proper cold-chain setup on top of the carton, not a thicker carton.

When is single wall enough for food?

Most of the time. Single wall handles a few pounds of dry food without trouble, and the lighter board is easier to fold, cheaper to ship and quicker to pack. A bakery box of cookies, a tray of donuts, a sleeve of snack bars or a lunch for two does not need two flutes.

Plenty of small food brands order double wall out of caution and then pay for strength they never use. Unless the box will carry real weight or sit under other boxes, start with single wall and test it. If you want a lighter option, look at our custom food boxes and takeout food boxes first.

How do I tell if my product needs two flutes?

Run three checks: total weight, stack height and travel distance. If the packed carton weighs more than you can comfortably carry with one hand, if it will be stacked more than a few high, or if it rides on a truck for days, double wall starts to pay for itself.

A worked example. Say you sell six 16 oz glass jars of salsa. Each jar is about 1.5 pounds filled, so the case carries roughly 9 pounds of product plus the packaging. Single wall might survive a short local delivery. For parcel shipping, where cartons get dropped and stacked, double wall with a cardboard divider between jars is the safer build, because the walls keep their shape when the carton takes a corner hit.

Can I put food directly in a double-wall carton?

Generally no. Corrugated board absorbs moisture and grease, so the food should sit in its own bag, tray, jar, wrap or liner inside the carton. Treat the carton as the shipping and stacking layer and the inner pack as the food-contact layer.

If you are packing food in direct contact with board, the rules depend on your product and your state or country. Check the rules that apply to your product. Ask us to confirm the board, inks and coatings for your spec before you order, since the right answer depends on what goes inside.

What are the limits of double wall?

It is heavier and bulkier, so it raises shipping weight and takes more pallet space per unit. It also looks industrial. A plain brown double-wall shipper is a poor choice if the box is part of the retail display.

For a presentable food gift with strength, consider an inner rigid or folding box inside a double-wall outer shipper. That pairing keeps the unboxing nice and the freight safe. If the box itself needs to look premium, our custom rigid boxes do that job better than any corrugated carton.

Which TBPB boxes use double wall?

Our double wall tuck top boxes are corrugated mailers built for heavy, fragile or high-value items, and they are made to your size. For cartons that ship but do not need the extra layer, custom corrugated boxes and our shipping boxes cover most food and gift shipments.

If you are shipping a boxed product that needs a presentation layer inside, read our guide to subscription box packaging for the outer and inner structure approach.

Questions buyers ask

Is there a minimum order for custom double-wall cartons?

No. We take orders with no minimum order, so you can order one carton to test the fit or thousands for a full run. Send the dimensions and quantity, even a single unit, and we will quote it.

Is double-wall corrugated food safe?

The board is not designed for direct contact with moist or greasy food. Pack the food in its own bag, tray, jar or wrap and use the carton as the outer layer. Check the rules that apply to your product, and ask us to confirm your spec.

How much weight can a double-wall carton hold?

It depends on the board grade, the box size and how the load is packed, so we do not quote a single number. As a rule, double wall suits heavy loads that single wall would crush. Tell us your packed weight and stack height and we will recommend a build.

Do I need double wall to ship food by parcel?

Not always. Light, dry goods ship fine in single wall. Glass jars, bottles and heavier multi-item orders benefit from double wall plus dividers, because parcel handling involves drops and stacking.

Can I print my logo on a double-wall carton?

Yes. We print to your artwork. Corrugated takes simple, bold artwork well, while very fine detail and photographic images look better on smooth folding cartons. Send your logo and we will advise on the print method for your spec.

How do I get a quote and a dieline?

Send us your product dimensions, quantity and any artwork on the request a quote page. We draw the dieline for your size and send it back with your quote.

How to order

Send the packed dimensions of your product, the weight and a rough quantity, even one. We draw the dieline, quote the job and show you the structure before anything is printed. Design help, samples and shipping are free, and if you hold a written quote from another supplier for the same specs, we will beat it. Start on our request a quote page.
