How the two boards are built
Corrugated is a sandwich: a flat liner on each side with a wavy fluted sheet between them. The flutes are tiny air columns that resist crushing and absorb shock. Common flute sizes run from E-flute (thin, around 1.5 mm, good print surface) through B-flute (about 3 mm, a general-purpose shipping workhorse) to C-flute (thicker, more stacking strength). Folding carton, also called paperboard or SBS, is a single sheet that is thinner and smoother. It is usually measured in points (thousandths of an inch), where a typical retail carton sits around 16 to 24 pt.
Which one your product needs
Ask three questions. Does the box have to survive a parcel carrier on its own? Does the product weigh more than a few hundred grams? Will the box be stacked? If any answer is yes, corrugated is the safer base. If the box sits on a shelf, goes inside a shipper, or holds something light such as cosmetics, supplements, candles or soap, a folding carton is lighter, prints better and costs less to ship empty.

Cases where the line blurs
Mailer boxes are corrugated but print well enough to count as retail packaging, which is why they dominate direct-to-consumer. Some products take both: a candle might sit in a folding carton inside a corrugated shipper. Do not over-engineer. If the product is light and ships inside a bigger carton anyway, the folding carton alone is enough. If it ships on its own, a mailer or a shipper is the safer pick.
