On a plain lid-and-base box the lid simply sits over the base. On a shoulder neck box the base has a narrower upper section, the neck, which rises above the main body. The lid slides down over that neck and stops on the shoulder, so you see two stepped levels instead of one flat seam. It looks deliberate and tailored, the way a good suit collar does, and the neck also gives the lid a snug, controlled fit.
The trade-off is cost in labor. There is more forming and wrapping in the structure than a standard two-piece box, so it makes sense where the unboxing is part of the product. Board, wrap and how thick the walls should be
Rigid boxes are built from thick chipboard, commonly in the range of 1.5 to 3 mm, wrapped in printed paper. Thicker board feels weightier and resists crushing, but it also adds to the outer size and the shipping weight. For a small fragrance box, a thinner board often feels more refined than a heavy one. For a heavy gift set, go thicker.
The wrap can be a printed coated paper, textured paper or a specialty stock. Soft-touch lamination, foil stamping, embossing and spot UV all work well on this style because the lid surface is broad and flat. Sizing a box with a neck
Measure your product at its longest, widest and tallest points. The inside cavity should be the product plus insert thickness plus a small tolerance, usually around 1/8 inch per side if there is no insert. Then think about the neck: its height controls how much of the lid overlaps. A taller neck gives a more secure fit but a less visible shoulder. A shorter neck makes a more dramatic step. One thing to plan for is the lid fit. Because the lid rides on the neck by friction, paper thickness and wrap tolerance matter, and a very tight fit can make the lid hard to lift off while a loose fit lets it slide around.
