Which hole shape, and who decides
A euro slot, the keyhole shape, is the most common and the most forgiving because the load spreads across the wide part. A plain round hole is simplest to die-cut and the least forgiving. A delta or sombrero hole spreads load like a euro slot with a different silhouette. A J-hook sits over the peg rather than through the panel and suits packs too heavy to punch.

Design for a full peg
On a merchandised peg, each pack covers most of the one behind it. What a shopper sees walking past is the top third of the front face and nothing else. That strip has to carry the brand, the product name and the variant.
The most common mistake is a beautifully balanced front panel with the logo in the middle, which is the part nobody can see. Move the identifying information up, keep the detail for the person who has already picked the pack up.
Windows, and what they cost you structurally
A window sells a product that looks better than it sounds, and on a peg it lets a shopper confirm color and size without opening anything. It also removes board from the panel, which matters because that panel is already carrying the hanging load.
Keep a solid margin between the window and the hang hole, and avoid running a window across a fold. If the pack is heavy and needs a window, that is usually the point to move to a header card so the load and the display are on different pieces.
Header cards versus a punched box
A punched box is one piece, so there is less to assemble and less to go wrong. A header card is a separate printed panel folded over the top of the pack and stapled or glued, and it gives you a larger branded area, a stronger hanging point, and the option to change the header without reprinting the box.
