A rigid box is a non-collapsible box built from thick chipboard, usually around two to three millimeters, wrapped in a printed paper. Unlike a folding carton, it does not flatten. It holds its shape permanently, which is why it feels closer to a hardcover book than to a cereal box and why brands reach for it when the packaging itself needs to feel premium.

How a rigid box is made

The core is a stiff greyboard cut into panels and formed into a fixed shape. A printed paper wrap is then applied over the board, so the outside can carry full color, foil, or a soft touch finish while the structure underneath stays solid. Because the board is thick and the box ships assembled rather than flat, a rigid box costs more than a folding carton but delivers a much more substantial hand feel.

Common rigid box styles

The main styles are the two piece lid and base, the magnetic closure box, the drawer or slide box, the book style hinged box, and the neck or shoulder box. Each changes how the box opens and how the product is revealed. For a full walkthrough of finishes and styles, see our guide to luxury packaging.

Rigid box vs folding carton

Choose rigid when you want the heaviest, most gift worthy feel, common in fragrance, jewelry, electronics, and premium gifting. Choose a folding carton when you need a lighter, lower cost box that ships flat. A folding carton with a soft touch laminate gets you a premium look for less if rigid is out of budget.

Order rigid boxes with no minimum

Most suppliers gate rigid construction behind large minimums. We print custom rigid boxes and the full rigid boxes with no minimum range from a single unit up, with a free proof before production. Tell us your product, size, and finish and we will send a price.
