Snap Lock Bottom Boxes

Advantages of Snap Lock Bottom Boxes Over Traditional Packaging

A snap-lock bottom box, also called a crash-lock or 1-2-3 bottom, has a base that locks into shape when you pop the carton open. It ships flat and sets up in about a second, with no tape and no glue on the bottom. For businesses that pack boxes by hand all day, that is the whole advantage.

Where it beats a straight tuck box

A standard tuck-end carton needs the bottom folded and tucked every time. A snap-lock bottom is already glued along the base creases, so the packer opens it and the base falls into place. When you are assembling a few hundred boxes a day, the seconds add up. The base is also stronger than a plain tuck bottom, which is the reason these are used for heavier items such as bottles, jars, and boxed sets.

Good uses

  • Cosmetic jars and bottles.
  • Candles and heavier retail items.
  • Food products in jars or cans.
  • Supplement bottles.

Limits

The glued base means these boxes are not suited to very large or very heavy items, and the glue area limits fancy interior structure. They also ship flat but not as flat as a tuck carton with no glued base, so check storage space. And because the glue flap sits inside the bottom, artwork on the inside bottom face is not possible.

Specs to confirm

Inside dimensions as length, width, and height, board weight, and if the bottom is rated for your product’s weight. Request a sample and load it with the real product, then lift it and shake it gently. If the base flexes, ask for a heavier board.

Regulated products such as food, cosmetics, and supplements need correct labeling, which the brand is responsible for confirming.
